Hand surgery and microsurgery

Orthopedics and Traumatology

Specialty focused on the treatment of pathologies of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, arm, pathologies involving the peripheral nervous system (peripheral nerves, nervous plexuses).

Pathologies can be traumatic, congenital, tumoral, infectious, neurological of the peripheral nervous system, among others.

Fractures and injuries involving the soft tissue envelope of segments such as the arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand can have the most varied presentations, from simple to complex, involving isolated segments or multiple segments.

In a simplified way, we divide the functional groups:

  • Flexion and extensor tendons.

  • Injuries to the ligaments and joints.

  • Fractures.

  • Neurological lesions of peripheral nerves.

  • Vascular injuries.

  • Skin covering lesions.

  • Mixed injuries.

Reconstruction of skin coverage, pedicle and free flaps. The concept, understanding and execution of skeletal muscle reconstruction through muscle, faciocutaneous, free and bone flaps are also widely used in lower limbs.

Early dialogue brings the benefit of fully optimized treatment in terms of therapeutic options. “Leave evaluation for later” can bring great difficulties in obtaining a satisfactory result. Once the injury is established, the healing process is initiated by the body. Delays in identifying the problem can lead to impaired wound healing or retraction of tendons, nerves or fractures, causing malunion.

This delay brings a lot of difficulty in achieving adequate results. When you think, “it's just a little finger… then I see that crooked… then I see that cut…”, Remember: “in small injuries, small delays can bring big difficulties!”.

Immediately seek appropriate guidance and assistance.

Most frequent diagnoses:

  • wrist fracture

  • carpal bone fracture

  • forearm fracture

  • Fracture of metacarpal and phalanges

  • arm fracture

  • elbow fracture

  • Flexion and extensor tendon injuries

  • trigger finger

  • Lateral and medial epicondylitis

  • de Quervain's tenosynovitis

  • Peripheral nerve injuries (ulnar nerve, median nerve, radial nerve).

  • Comprehensively peripheral nerve syndromes (carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, radial nerve injury, fibular nerve injury)

  • tissue losses

  • Musculoskeletal infections and osteomyelitis

  • Joint infection (sceptic arthritis)

  • congenital deformities

  • Dupuytren's contracture

  • physeal injuries / growth cartilage

To obtain the title of hand surgeon, it is necessary to carry out a period of two years of medical specialization/residency in an accredited, categorized institution, approved by the Brazilian Society of hand surgery and will be approved by means of a theoretical and oral test.
